The Pastel Press

The Newsletter of the Oklahoma Pastel Society

September, 2008

How was your summer?  Hope it was fun, relaxing, filled with accomplishments – whatever you wanted it to be.  During the summer, lots of members of the Oklahoma Pastel Society have been busy entering art shows, taking – and sometimes teaching – workshops and lining up really great programs for our next year.  Let’s get started!

September Program – Lorenzo Chavez!

No, your memory isn’t faulty – Glen Thomas was originally set to demo for us in September.  However, Glen’s graciously agreed to switch to another month since Lorenzo will be in Oklahoma City for his solo show at the Grapevine Gallery.

Lorenzo was born in New Mexico but now lives with his family in Colorado.  He’s been a guest artist for the Plein Air Painters of America, participated in the Laguna Plein Air Exhibit at the Laguna Art Museum and was part of the “American Art in Miniature” exhibition at the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa a few years ago.

If you’ve taken one of Lorenzo’s workshops or if you’ve seen a demonstration, you know you’ll learn something new and useful!  So join us at the upcoming OPS meeting, on Monday, SEPTEMBER 8TH, at the Will Rogers Garden Center, 3400 N.W. 36th Street, in Oklahoma City; the meeting begins at 6:30 p.m.  If you need directions, please call Sue Ann at 405-330-5467 or email her at sueann1022@cox.net.  Bring your own non-alcoholic beverage to enjoy with the snacks that will be provided.

Future Programs and Other Ideas

The OPS board and membership have gathered together some extremely excellent artists – some local and some not – who will be presenting programs through May 2009.  In addition to Lorenzo Chavez in September, we’ll have Clive Tyler in October and Sheila Minnich in November.  After our Christmas break, look forward to seeing demos by Mitsuno Reedy, Dale Martin, Becky Way, Ted Majka, Glen Thomas and who knows who else!  We might even find a way to fit in the Pastel Society of America’s annual show too.

“Other Ideas” – well, we’ve had several suggestions.   First, you – the members – need to let the current officers know if you would like to continue the monthly “Member’s Choice” art show and the Door Prize drawing at each month’s meeting.  (We’re NOT going to have either of those at the September meeting – but we DO want to hear what you think!)

Another “idea” – make a donation (either monetary or specifically requested supplies) to a local school’s art program.  The art programs at so many schools are being cut back more and more each year; if we can help in some way, then let’s do it!

Yet another “idea” and directly related to Terry Ludwig’s recent workshop – APRONS!  Terry wears a great, functional apron while he teaches and paints; it turns out that Janie Schmitz knows where to get them.  And we even know of someone who can embroider the OPS logo and/or each person’s name on their apron.  We’ll talk about this at the September meeting!

Fall 2008 Show at The Great Frame Up

The annual fall show at The Great Frame will run from October 24, 2008 through November 1, 2008.  The $30 entry fee will let you enter up to THREE painting in this show.  Any unsold artwork must be picked up on November 1st.  The prospectus for this show will be published soon…and, yes, the show will be judged for prizes and the prizes will be good ones too!

Kathy and Jim are once again offering a super framing special for this show.  They will professionally frame your painting using one of a group of specially selected, in-stock frames for only $35!  The framing includes plain glass, one paper mat (if desired), spacers, etc.  OR you can select a different frame molding at The Great Frame Up, using other materials, for the special artist 50% discount.

IMPORTANT:  if at all possible, please have your paintings to Kathy and Jim no later than October 16, 2008.  (That’s for the in-stock frames; if you think you want a different frame, please have your work there at least a week earlier!)

And keep on painting those wonderful pastel paintings because we’ll have a month-long show in Paseo in March 2009!  If you have experience staging a show, please lend a hand; give Jan a call at 405-613-4426 and get involved in the fun.

Workshops in Review

Missouri artist Jerry Brown’s one-day “Painting Clouds in Pastel” workshop (held the day after the Paseo Arts Festival) was a smashing success.  Jerry is an excellent instructor as well as being an extremely talented artist.  And the works created by the participants in this workshop were energetic, exciting, engaging…great!

Just a few weeks ago, Terry Ludwig was back in Oklahoma City teaching a 3-day workshop.  And, just like last year, it was wonderful!  Besides thanking Terry for sharing his wit, wisdom and great pastels with us, we also want to thank all the kind, helpful people at The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.  The classroom facilities there are top-notch…and the art work is pretty darn good too!

Clive Tyler Workshops in October!

Yes, Clive will be teaching not just one but two workshops for OPS in October.  AND he’s also agreed to be the Demo Artist at the October meeting to boot!  He’s won multiple awards in the last two years’ “Pastel 100” competitions sponsored by The Pastel Journal.  Clive’s works are shown locally at Adelante! Gallery in Paseo; check out www.cynthiadanielwolf.com and www.aspenfinearts.com/about.html to see some of Clive’s works and to find out more about him.

Here’s what you need to know to get enrolled in one of Clive’s workshops:  The first workshop is a 3-day plein air workshop, October 13, 14 and 15.  Cost is $280 for OPS members and $330 for non-members.

After taking a day off, Clive will lead a 2-day plein air workshop, October 17 and 18.  Cost for this 2-day workshop is $220 for OPS members and $250 for non-members.

Both workshops will be held at a blackberry farm in far north Edmond.  To hold your spot in one – or both! – of these workshops, send $100 deposit (for each workshop, if you want to take both!) to Oklahoma Pastel Society, PO Box 75696, Oklahoma City, OK  73147.  Janie Schmitz, OPS treasurer, asks that those taking Clive’s workshops please include their phone number(s) and email address too.  The balance of the workshop payments are due on October 1st!!!  Clive is limiting enrollment for each workshop to ONLY 10 STUDENTS – so get your deposit in NOW!!!

Other Possible Workshops in the Future

As you know, Becky Way’s “It’s All About the Strokes, Folks” workshop has been postponed.  BUT we’re working with Becky to re-schedule it for late 2008 or early 2009.  And as we’ve said before, the Oklahoma Pastel Society is definitely blessed to have so many talented artists who are not only willing but are also extremely qualified to conduct great workshops.  Let Pam Brewer, workshop chair, know who you’d like to have here to teach a workshop – both our own talented members and others from other areas of the state and country.

“We Know What You Did This Summer” News…

Several Oklahoma Pastel Society members entered works in the Oklahoma Art Guild’s “Small Works” Members’ Show, held July 2 – July 26, 2008 in Gallery One on Paseo.  Not only did OPS members enter the show, TWO took home some of the top awards.  Jan Hutchinson’s “Coming Storm” took the Best of Show honor and Sheila Minnich’s “El Hombre” won 1st prize in the Small Wonders category.  Congratulations to both Jan and Sheila and all our other members who participated in this OAG show!

If YOU – yes, YOU! – have news you’d like included in The Pastel Press newsletter, you have to tell us about it!  Unfortunately, your humble co-editors don’t have ESP and we definitely can’t read anything in tea leaves – you’ve got to send us information about the shows you’ve entered, the prizes you’ve won, the classes you’ve taught or taken…you get the picture.  PLEASE let us know what you’d like to see in the newsletter.  Thanks!

And couple more things – DUES and the OPS WEBSITE!

Have you paid your annual OPS dues yet?  Hope so!  But if you haven’t, it’s not too late.  Please send your check for $30 to Oklahoma Pastel Society, P.O. Box 75696, Oklahoma City, OK 73147.  We appreciate your participation and support.

Make sure you check out the absolutely smashing OPS website OFTEN!  Web-guru, Becky Way, is always adding fun stuff that you need to see and read to the website.  For instance, if you check it out now, you can see works by those who took Terry Ludwig’s recent workshop.  If you don’t have anything in the Members’ Gallery section, email one of your paintings, along with some biographical info, to Becky at beckyway@cox.net so she can add YOUR work to that page.   Thanks!

See you at the meeting!
